"ICE" Campaign

By Firefighter/EMT Tom Tolento
December 3, 2007

The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during an emergency under the name 'ICE'.

The idea was thought up by a paramedic based out of cambridge who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were almost always mobile phones with the patients, but he didn't know which number to call. Bob Brotchie, a clinical team leader for the East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust, hatched the plan last year after struggling to get contact details from shocked or injured patients He thought that it would be a good idea it there was nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE'.

For more than one contact name, simply enter ICE1, ICE2, and ICE3, etc. We also recommend adding who the ICE person is such as mother, spouse, brother, sister, etc. Example ICE(mother).

When an emergency situation happens such as a disaster, accident, or fire happen emergency personnel can contact one of your loved ones or friends to let them know to meet them at the hospital and inform them what has happened. And your ICE contact can inform them on your medical history and let them know how to treat you better

So always remember ICE (In Case of Emergency)
