Busy Day Ends With Fire in Phoenixville

By Firefighter Robert Edwards
February 13, 2009

The day started off with 2 separate fire alarms before noon, both of which were determined to be false alarms.

A few hours later, Squad 47 was special called to assist Uwchlan Ambulance (87) for lifting. The crew's assistance was not needed after arriving on scene, and the squad returned available.

At 6:30pm, Engine 47-2 responded to the Extended Stay Hotel for fire alarm activation. Crews found burnt food in a first floor room. After resetting the alarm, Chester County Fire Board advised Engine 47-2 of a chimney fire on the 200 block of Whistling Swan Lane. Engine 47-2 (R.Edwards) cleared the first call and responded to Whistling Swan Lane. With a crew back at the station, Tower 47 (B. Kagel) responded with a crew of 4.

Engine 47-2 was the first to arrive and dropped a 5" supply line into the court, while Tower 47 took the previous court entrance to gain better access to the chimney.

Battalion 47 (Minahan) arrived behind the Engine and assumed "Whistling Swan Command" while the Command Post was set up at Tower 47.

The Engine crew found a smoke condition inside the residence and checked the attic space for any extension. The Tower crew set the truck up to the chimney to check for any fire that may still be inside.

Just after 8pm, the Lionville Fire Co. was dispatched for their 6th call of the day to relocate Phoenixville's station 65 while they were operating at first due building fire.

While the Tower was en route to 65, an additional Engine and Ladder was called to the scene, bringing Tower 47. Once on scene, the crew was sent to the roof utilizing the ladder for ventilation.

Tower crew operated for 2 hours before returning to Lionville.

The company responded to 7 calls for the day.
