1977 Autocar Tanker

"47-6" & "Tanker 47"

The 1977 Autocar tanker is a 2 man cab, 500 gallon per minute pump elliptical tanker. The original red tank is, in fact, the original tank from the 1967 Mack D.M. 400 tanker, remounted onto the Autocar chassis. In 1992, the truck was refurbished with a brand new stainless steel body and a polished stainless steel 3500 gallon elliptical water tank, made possible by 4 Guys Fire Trucks.

Originally designated as "47-6," the fire service began adopting more plain-english designation to cater to the wider variety of fire apparatus that were becoming necessary, and became "Tanker 47."

The equipment compliment in 2008 consisted of:

  • 3500 gallon water tank
  • 40 gal Class B foam tank
  • 500 gpm Hale pump
  • 3 - Electronically controlled dump valves (one on each side)
  • 2 - rear direct tank fills
  • 200' 1.75" preconnect attack line
  • 200' 1.75" dead lay attack line
  • 300' 3" supply line
  • 200' 5" supply line
  • 20' 4" suction hose and low-level strainer
  • 2 - SCBA and spare cylinders
  • 250 gpm portable pump

On November 3, 2008, after 31 years of service, the Autocar tanker was sold to "The Golden Age of Trucking Museum" in Middlebury, Connecticut. To this day, the truck is still privately owned and preserved, and looks exactly as it did in 2008, lettering and graphics still intact.
