As a continuation of last week's training, the members of the Lionville Fire Company conducted the second part of their two-part ice rescue training series at Marsh Creek lake. Members ventured out into sub-freezing conditions onto the frozen solid lake to continue practicing their existing rescue techniques, as well as to learn new ones.

Working on over 12 inches of ice accumulation on the lake, members worked on various methods of victim extrication, medical treatment, self rescue, and hazard awareness. Specialized cold water immersion suits were worn to completely insulate against the near-freezing water and provide buoyancy, along with a safety harness for the rescuer.

Ice Safety Reminder for Residents:

No ice is ever completely safe, conditions can vary widely across the same body.
Avoid walking, skating, or driving on frozen bodies of water unless they have been professionally certified safe.
Keep pets off the ice.
If someone falls through the ice, call 911 immediately; do not attempt a rescue yourself.
