Tractor Trailer Fire
By Firefighter Michael Esterlis
December 29, 2009
At 22:35 the company was dispatched to a tractor trailer fire on the turnpike. Shortly after dispatch, Engine 47-5 and Engine 47-2 made the response to the west bound lanes of the PA Turnpike. Based on the initial report from the turnpike commission, an additional tanker was request to the scene (Glenmoore 48-5).
Arriving on scene Engine 47-2(B.Edwards) along with Engine 47-5(Assistant Chief Garver) crews found a 53' trailer well involved with fire. Firefighters quickly went in service with 2, 1 ¾ lines from Engine 47-2, while 47-5 supplied water. With limited access to the seat of the fire, crews had to make multiple holes in the trailer for fire suppression. The bulk of the fire was extinguished within a quick period of time, but with the amount of materials still in the trailer, extensive overhaul operations were required.
For complete extinguishment of all the hot spots in the trailer, heavy excavation equipment was needed at the scene. Crews operated on scene a little over 3 hours.
We would like to thank Engine 46-2 for standing by at our station
