By Lionville Fire Company
April 6, 2014

On Sunday evening April 6th, at 17:44 hours, the Glen Moore Fire Company (48), East Brandywine Fire Company (49), Elverson EMS (89), and Uwchlan EMS (87) were dispatched to the Cornog Quarry for a high angle rescue.

Chief 48 responded and was advised by Chester County 911 that there was a report of one victim that had fallen more than 50' down a steep cliff and was stuck about 30' above the waterline. Additionally, reports were being received of at least one other person on the cliffside near the victim. Chief 48 arrived and requested the Chester County Technical Rescue Task Force (CCRTF) and also specially requested a boat.

The CCRTF Rope High Angle Team (Station 72) was dispatched bringing rescue technicians from Lionville, Fame, Valley Forge, Longwood Fire Companies and Berwyn Paramedics. Rescue 47 & Utility 47 W/Boats 47-1 & 2 along with the rest of the task force units quickly responded. Lionville volunteers worked with the task force units to gain access and rescue the victims (See Story below from CCRTF).

Lionville volunteers operated for approximately 5 hours before clearing the scene.

Special thanks to the Kimberton Fire Company who stood by while Lionville operated at the incident. Rescue 61 (Kimberton) handled one call for service during the stand by. The crew from Rescue 61 also was a tremendous help getting all 47 units back in service after the incident.

From the Chester County Rescue Task Force:

This evening around dinner time, Stations 48, 49 and EMS units were dispatched to the Cornog Quarry in Wallace Twp for a Rescue-Fall from an elevation. Chester County Communications advised Chief 48 that there was a report of one victim that had fallen more than 50' along a steep cliffside and was stuck about 30' above the waterline. Additionally, reports were being received of at least one other person on the cliffside near the victim. Chief 48 requested a boat and the Rescue Task Force. Station 72 (CCRTF) and Boat 47 were dispatched. Units from Lionville, Fame, Longwood, Valley Forge and Medic 2 (Berwyn) arrived on scene. Boat 47-1(Lionville) launched and made verbal and visual contact with the victim. The Rope Rescue Task Force began the long trek through the heavily wooded area above the quarry and was guided to the area above the victim by the Boat 47 crew. A rescue plan was developed and Rope Rescue Technicians from 47 were lowered to the victims. A medic was also lowered to initiate care. The first victim was secured into a Stokes basket and lowered to Boat 47-1 who transported to awaiting EMS units at the boat launch. The second victim was secured in a harness and lowered with one of the rescuers to the boat, as well. All Rescue Task Force personnel, equipment and units were accounted for and returned to service. Crews worked seamlessly as darkness fell upon the scene. ATV units from Longwood and East Brandywine were a tremendous help in gaining access for crews and equipment.
