Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries

The Lionville Fire Company would like to remind residents to set your clocks forward 1 hour, tonight, March 11th. At this time you should also change the batteries in each of your smoke detectors.

Here are some facts as to why it is important to change your batteries at this time:

1. In a fire, a working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in half.
2. Between 2003-2006, roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths were the result of either the home not having a smoke alarm, or a working alarm.
- In 40% of these deaths, no smoke alarms were present
- In 23% of these deaths, smoke alarms were present, but did not sound.
- In more than half of these homes, the fire was large enough to cause the alarm to sound, however, batteries were either missing, or the detector was disconnected (Nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected alarms).

It is important to test your smoke detector once a month. For more information on smoke detectors please visit: http://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pyfff/smkalarm.html
